The modernizers in Egypt, starting in 1950, began emptying out the palaces of the Pashas as the Egyptian Throne began to crumble. Among the treasures were libraries dating back over thousands of years, their contents ordered burned.

Aghast at the potential carnage of treasures housing the history and art of Islam and the Arab world, a group of private citizens sought out the soldiers ordered to burn the manuscripts and bought the manuscripts before they could be burned, moving them safely to Europe in the years prior to Throne's collapse in 1952.

The rescue resulted in a collection of 20,000 manuscripts dating from the 8th Century covering mathematics, science, surgery, astrology, astronomy, language, magic, history, geography, medicine, architecture and religion written in the old languages of Farsi, Hebrew, Arabic, Coptic or Turkish. These manuscripts have been safely stored in Europe for fifty years and are now just being brought to light.
